Marketing Manager – TMI Simulation Solutions

In today’s environment, a comprehensively trained driver does not only contribute to road safety but also to the productivity of the transport industry and the country’s economy. The challenges of road freight companies in South Africa have a huge impact on consumers, employees, companies and the economy – all already affected deeply by the COVID-19 Pandemic resulting in a rise of unemployment.

Stats SA reviews that unemployment rose from 28.47% in 2019 to 34.4% in 2021. When looking at the statistics in detail, the highest concentration of unemployment is in young people (from 15 to 34 years), making one of every two young people unemployed in Q1: 2021.

In addition, women in South Africa and around the world still face additional challenges that delay them from accessing employment. The rate of unemployment among women, at 48,7%, was 8,1 percentage points higher than among their male counterparts in the 2nd quarter of 2021.

When analysing the roots of this problem, we could not help but to ask: “What steps have we taken as a company to ensure we offer better employment opportunities to women and youth in South Africa? Are we keeping faithful to our core essence and values?”

Mariana Esquivel from TMI Simulation Solutions with Clare Vale from The Truck Man

Our first approach was to say that education and prior work experience must be accessible to all but this mission is not an easy task to perform. It does require a collaborative effort and also an inspiring one. Therefore, we went to look at what women do in the transport sector currently and we were amazed to see that many women leaders in the transport sector have taken the initiative to change the mind-set of women.

A change of mind-set does not only involve the change in women and the youth in South Africa but the people that make decisions – the employers that have not questioned their involvement in the South African economy and labour practices. For us, the task is to collaborate and ally with other South African businesses and government entities to share our common initiatives but the task does not just remain there.

TMI Simulation Solutions and Drivio dreams of high-skilled youth employment in our communities and for us, the solution is to offer a high-skilled training programme for professional drivers and Fleet Managers. Our vision is to offer an innovative driver training programme that does not only rely on practical training but the use of the latest simulation technologies that enable a blended and effective learning experience that reaches over 90% of retention in the trainee.

Of course, to be able to speed up the mind-set change, it is necessary to share the stories of women who have added leadership initiatives and keep working to lower the boundaries for women in transport. To this end, we organised a morning of interaction between women where our guest speakers shared their living testimonies of change and contribution to a sustainable transport industry. Under the banner of ‘Women in Transport, we were honoured to have on board:

Useful Driving Hacks Every Driver Should Know About

Google Maps PinWhether you’re a first-time driver or a pro, everyone will find driving hacks useful. We’ve scoured the internet to gather some of the greatest and, in some cases, strangest driving hacks you should know about.

Drop a pin on Google Maps the moment you’ve found parking space in a crowded parking lot. This way, you won’t have to waste time searching for your car.

Ask people who drive on the same routes as you for alternative route suggestions that may help you avoid traffic.

Make good use of Apps such as Google Maps to get around. A simple GPS navigation App will save you a lot of money.

Avoid having a lot of keys on the same ring as your car key. It can damage the ignition switch.

Use a cereal dispenser as a car trash bin while driving.

On your GPS, set your home location to a destination near your house. This way, if your car gets stolen, thieves won’t be able to locate your home.

Car a bit hot in summer? Roll one window all the way down and then move over to the other side and open and close the adjacent door a few times.

You may be able to fix minor scratches on your car with clear nail polish.

Holding your car remote under your chin will increase its range.

Tilting your head to the side while driving can help with car sickness.

Not a fan of car air fresheners? Keep an open box of dryer sheets in your car; they last longer.

Take pictures of the car you are renting so that you cannot be scammed and blamed for any damages that weren’t your fault.

If you’d like to keep your windows from fogging, simply cut a clean potato in half and rub it all over the inside of the window. Leave it to dry.

Want to get rid of a sticker on your car window? Soak newspaper in warm water and cover the sticker with it for 10 minutes.

Stick a pool noodle on your garage wall if you’re prone to banging your door against the wall.

Use a bit of toothpaste to clean foggy headlights. Rub the toothpaste over the lens and rinse off with water.

One of the ultimate driving hacks remains having a driver’s licence. If you’re a learner, allow  to revolutionise driving lessons for you. With our state-of-the-art driving simulation technology, you’ll learn how to drive in a safe and comfortable environment without actually having to leave the building! Contact us to book your first driving lesson.

Reasons why students fail their learner’s permit exam

images

You’re itching to learn how to drive but unfortunately you have to overcome the tiensie weensie pothole of passing your learner’s permit exam. Which means you need to study and familiarise yourself with the rules of the road before you can hit said road. Hey, there are steps to everything in life, we all want to matriculate but we need to pass the eleventh grade first.

Being passionate driving instructors in the industry, we took it upon ourselves to learn what elements might cause students to fail their learner’s permit exam and enlighten you so you can hit the exam giving your best shot.

Yeah, no, cramming isn’t going to work

Just like any exam, you need to manage your study time to ensure that you cover everything in a timely fashion. You can’t use the night before the exam to cram countless rules, signs and signals. Give yourself enough time to study, at least a month or so in advance.

Students don’t test themselves often enough

Hop online and see where you can download and do practice tests to prepare for the exam. Ask a friend or a family member to quiz you at various times and instances. When riding in a car, take note of the signs around you. Ask a licenced driver to explain what they are doing and why they’re doing it.

Students don’t know what to expect

A shock many students have experienced is the fact that the test in South Africa is now conducted on computers. You need to know what to expect when entering the test, this way you’ll be much calmer.

Anxiety takes control of the wheel

No matter the kind of exam, anxiety has been at the root of many failures. The key is to prepare and stay calm. If you find it difficult to cope with the anxiety, here are a few things you can do:

Take a few deep breaths

Remember that you can take the exam again. Failing won’t mean you’ll have to redo a school year – Relax

Study with a friend or an experienced driver to set yourself at ease. There’s no need to struggle alone.

Solution to all of the above? Contact Drivio and let our experienced driving instructors help you ace your test!

Drivio’s interactive e-learning system brings theory to life. With us, you can earn your learner’s permit faster than you’ve thought possible. Have a look at our packages!

Remember, you’re not studying just to pass the exam and gain your ticket to driving lessons; you are going to be using these rules throughout your life on the road.

Drivio GM Tannith Thompson Talks About Driving Change And What It Takes To Become A Successful Businesswoman

metroTannith Thompson, GM of Drivio, was acknowledged during the Woman’s Month Special as a “Mover and Shaker” as well as an extremely successful businesswoman in South Africa. Tannith holds a BComm Hons from Rhodes University and has not held back from climbing the corporate ladder with impeccable manner. She is a game changer in every sense of the word and is changing the landscape of corporate training and retail in her industry! Metro FM was incredibly excited to have the opportunity to interview Tannith and talk to her about her accomplishments and how Drivio is taking over the industry and proving to be a massive success in the market place.

Q. Let’s start with your background. Who is Tannith, where are you from and what inspired you to study towards a Bcom Honours Degree?

A. I was born and bred in Johannesburg and live in the buzzing heart of Sandton. Growing up I spent my High School days in boarding school which I absolutely loved, as I spent most of my time playing sports (and driving my parents crazy). After finishing school. I traveled and worked overseas and spent two years studying in Europe and thereafter I decided to pursue studying business and applied back home in South Africa for a Bcomm at Rhodes University. Really, who I am is a fun-loving woman, with an incredibly big heart and huge passion for life! Not only is my career a priority but so is my remarkable family, incredible friends and my phenomenal partner who I have been so unbelievably blessed with!

Q. You became very successful very early on in your career which speaks volumes of you Tannith; but how did you achieve that?

A. My degree definitely set the foundation for the work space I was entering into, but it really came down to giving 110% from the get-go. I was very blessed with an outstanding boss when I started out, Quique Sanchez. He was my mentor and my role model in the work space. He took me under his wing and taught me everything that I know today from a business perspective and even in life! Quique identified that I had the knowledge and skills to improve current operations and sales in a real way in a very developed company, and he gave me the space to do that. It was from those successes that I had the opportunity to prove myself in the very early days. I was able to use my skill-set and strategy development qualities to make a difference in a very valuable way and over time, I was blessed with a number of promotions where ultimately I arrived as the Sales and Marketing Executive of a large international company.

Q. After all your achievements, what made you decide to embark on your journey with Drivio?

A. Quite simply put, I had a business associate contact me who was consulting for Drivio at that time, and she was so excited “Tannith, you’ve got to meet the Director of this company Drivio who I’m consulting for, you have got to see for yourself what they are trying to achieve, and you will love it!” I thought “Drivio” I have never heard of this company and did some research, met with the Director Thivash Moodley and after understanding what he was trying to achieve in the company I was blown away! After reading the business plan and getting to grips with the model, and the endless possibilities for this young company, I was totally captivated! I will not lie, I thought to myself “oh my goodness, this is a huge challenge Tannith” but within identifying that challenge (I’m not scared by challenges in fact I love them) and the capability of the brand and that I could support driving this business that is trying to make a difference in South Africa and will be successful – it was a no brainer to get involved!

Q. Not only are you a franchisee, you are also a GM, and Head of Sales and Marketing. As a woman, do you feel you have to perform all these extra roles to have an impactful and successful career?

A. Absolutely not, every woman is different having different strengths and attributes and I admire women who are in positions that allow them to solely focus on one role. As a woman/human being you need to identify what your strengths are and as you develop your career, spend time growing what you are good at and what you enjoy.

Q. What are some of the challenges you’ve come across as a woman within the driving school industry?

A. It is a very male dominated industry but I do not let that affect myself or my team in any way. Even in my life I am surrounded by a strong male presence – my boss is a fantastic entrepreneur, my Father is a phenomenal businessman and my partner is an extremely successful and influential businessman and as women we should embrace the male presence both at work and in life. As women we should work positively with our male colleagues and we shouldn’t look at any male dominated space as a challenge but rather as a gift and opportunity to bring your female influence into that space. We have strong women in our company who exceed our expectations every day and the gents respect them very much!

Q. Drivio talks about being a technologically advanced driving school, which is a better option than other driving schools. What exactly sets it apart from traditional driving schools?

A. Our entire consumer experience is unlike any other. Our retail space is breathtaking and when you walk into our stores you are instantly blown away by the set-up! Our customer service is of outstanding quality and our highly trained driving instructors are hands-down the best in the country! Our simulator technology, which Thivash Moodley worked incredibly hard in building, is undoubtedly one of our secrets to our success! We have a large fleet of vehicles that supports our operations and we don’t just stop at the learner’s or driver’s [license] attainment – we strongly advise all our students to go one-step further and do their advanced driving course with us which improves their skills even more! We’re not just a driving school; we are the leaders in the corporate driver training industry as well! We have phenomenal courses such as: defensive driver training, economical driver training, dangerous goods, off-road… you name it! Companies are so impressed with Drivio and our training that has increased the capability of their drivers, reduced accidents, lowered their fuel costs, and lowered the costs of maintenance of their vehicles, that we have built such a strong and reputable name for Drivio in the industry. Lastly, we are the first and only Franchised driving school in the country! We realized that if we really want to achieve our goals of producing better drivers and improving the safety of our roads in our country then Franchising is the way to go!

Q. How has your driving school succeeded in achieving a pass rate that is three times the national average?

A. Every step of our process sets the student up for success. With the one-on-one support and attention from our instructors, our simulator technology gets them comfortable before we take them on the road. Our successful training methodology is of such high value that the student is more than prepared on the day of testing.

Q. So, how do interested parties purchase a franchise of Drivio?

A. You can go to our website at drivio.co.za and find all the information on our Franchise page. Should you want to proceed, you will need to download the pre-screening checklist; we have a very stringent process of identifying prospective franchisees. There are a number of qualifiers that need to be established in order for us to understand if you are a suitable candidate. We have built an incredible and successful business model and we want to continue growing it in the right way and correct franchisee selection is critical for us.

Q. As a successful woman in business, what advice do you have for other women?

A. If you are starting out in your career give it your all, because how you start will determine the rest of your journey. So when I started my career I really gave it my all which allowed me to excel early on in my career which brought me to the point where I am today. Always remain true to who you are and remember that you are a representation of your brand and company, always fly that flag high! You are only as strong as the woman you allow yourself to be, take responsibility for ensuring you lead a successful life both in and outside of work and lead from the front with your team!

What is defensive driving and why do you need to learn it?

Defensive driving refers to a series of techniques drivers learn and apply in order to reduce the dangers connected to driving. Through defensive driving you’re essentially saving lives, time and money regardless of the actions of others on the road.

Isn’t offensive driving better?

Offensive driving refers to the practice of taking control of the road and forcing other drivers to follow your lead or change their driving style to adapt to yours so as to avoid an accident. Accidents are thus far more likely with this driving style.

I’ve been driving for so long, do I really need to learn defensive driving?

Whether you’ve been driving for many years or an amateur, same rules of the road apply to everyone. If you’ve been driving for many years, you tend to become neglectful. First you stop checking your mirrors and the next time you’re just popping out to the store without wearing a seatbelt. One can never know what might happen. We should thus always be alert.

A few basic defensive driving tips

Don’t start driving without making sure that you and everyone in the car is wearing a seatbelt

Check your mirrors regularly.

Slow down and take extra care when driving in bad weather conditions.

Keep an eye out for pedestrians and animals/pets.

Never drive when tired or under the influence.

Never assume all drivers on the road will follow the rules. Always be ready for someone to run a red light or stop sign.

Rules aren’t optional. Follow them.

Maintain a safe following distance.

Monitor your blind spots.

Use your blinkers.

Drive at a steady pace and always keep to the advised speed.

Drivio can assist

Drivio covers the whole nine yards when it comes to driving education. Our experienced instructors see students through their learning journey from beginning to an end which usually results in a first time pass.

Our Defensive Driving course is designed for both learner and professional drivers. The course is a combination of theory and practical driver training to assist the student in improving awareness under different driving conditions. The course can be tailored to suit the needs of the client and can range between 4-8 hours of training.

What does the course cover?

  • We combine the K53 driving standard with defensive driving which include vehicle inspections, blind spots, observations and more.
  • We cover the mechanics of safe driving: following distances, reaction times, emergency and cadence braking, driving in adverse weather conditions and more.
  • Vehicle forces: traction, braking, aerodynamic and inertial forces.
  • Practical vehicle inspections: preliminaries before driving, manoeuvring in a yard and on-the-road driving.
  • SIPDE and the system of vehicle control.

We take the safety of not only our students but other drivers on the road very seriously. Safety is, after all, one of the main reasons why Drivio was started. Have a look at our learner’s packages and contact us to book your first session.
